The fiftieth date of David Bowie’s Serious Moonlight tour, and by the band’s own account roughly sixty thousand people — the biggest crowd The Tubes ever played to. Peter Gabriel again on the same bill, five years on from Knebworth.

The advertisement bills it as “the concert of the decade,” and the reach was real: a Saskatoon radio station and a coach firm sold a $99 package that bussed fans several hundred miles to Edmonton and home again the same day.

Not the Edmonton show — no footage of that night has surfaced. This is the television programme Rock Arena in 1978, which carried both David Bowie and The Tubes, half a decade before the two shared a stadium bill in Alberta.
