Journey’s manager Herbie Herbert cut a deal with Bill Graham: sell out three local shows, and Graham would hand over an opening slot of Herbert’s choosing. The band booked a club called the Village and sold it out three times with themed nights built on post-hippie San Francisco — The Streaker’s Ball and Mondo Bondage. Earlier still, they had played bills with The Pointer Sisters and Sylvester. Herbert collected on the bet by picking the biggest show on the calendar.
